The effect of five bean varieties on the biology of the red mite, Tetranychus desertorum Banks, was studied under laboratory conditions (24 ± 1°C, 80 ± 5°/o R.H.). These varieties had been previously rated as resistant or susceptible under field conditions. BAT 93, a resistant material confirmed its resistance. When the mite was reared on it, signifi­cant effects were detected: lower oviposition rate, lesser adult size, shorter adult and life cycle duration, and higher adult morality. These results suggest a possible antibiotic effect. Varieties BAT 82 and BAT 417 were intermediate whereas BAT 280 and ICA-Pijao were susceptible.
