EFFECT OF FIVE BEAN VARIETIES ON THE BIOLOGY AND FERTILITY OF THE RED SPIDER, Tetranychus desertorum BANKS. (ACARI, TETRANYCHIDAE)
Main Article Content
The effect of five bean varieties on the biology of the red mite, Tetranychus desertorum Banks, was studied under laboratory conditions (24 ± 1°C, 80 ± 5°/o R.H.). These varieties had been previously rated as resistant or susceptible under field conditions. BAT 93, a resistant material confirmed its resistance. When the mite was reared on it, significant effects were detected: lower oviposition rate, lesser adult size, shorter adult and life cycle duration, and higher adult morality. These results suggest a possible antibiotic effect. Varieties BAT 82 and BAT 417 were intermediate whereas BAT 280 and ICA-Pijao were susceptible.
