Since 1972, over 10.000 bean accessions have been evaluated for resistance to the leafhopper, E. kraemeri at CIAT (mean temperature, 24°C; mean relative humidity, 80°/o). Resistance to the pest is currently being bred into commer­cial bean varieties. Based on a visual damage scale 3.3% of the accessions were classified as resistant. Black—seeded accessions com­prised 78% of the resistant materials. The lowest levels of resistance were found in red and white seeds. Population levels of adults and nymphs did not correlate significantly with the visual damage score nor with yield loss caused by the insect. "Reproductive adaption", a visual estimate of an accession's ability to yield under E. kraemeri attack, was significantly correlated to yield loss. Breeding methodology and the results of four successive cycles of selection are discussed.
