From 1976 to 1979 studies were conducted at the C.R.I. "Nataima" of the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario, in order to collect, identify, and determine the importance of arthropods found in soybeans in the Department of Tolima. The role of 22 pests is discussed. Five of these, Anticarsia gemmatalis Húbner, Spodoptera sunia(Guenée), S. frugiperda (J. E. Smith), (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Tetranychus sp. (Acari: Tetranychidae) and Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were determinad to be principal pests. Various natural enemies of these pests were also found. Observations on the abundance of insect pests and their effect on plant defoliation were also made.
