NEW BREEDING TECHNIQUE OF "SALIVAZO DE LAS PASTOS" IN GREENHOUSE (Homoptera: Cercopidae)

This paper reports on a new rearing technique developed for the spittlebugs Zulia colombiana and Aeneolamia reducta. Emphasis was made on nymphal stages which were the most difficult to rear. Brachiaria spp. plants planted on plastic pots and covered with an aluminum sheet were the most efficient method for rearing nymphs. The aluminum sheet allowed a constant microclimate with high relative humidity and darkness which stimulate the production of secondary roots and supply the preferred feeding sites for first instar nymphs. Nymphs migrate to the base of the stems were they completed development.
