DEVELOPMENT OF BEAN RESISTANT LINES TO Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman)) (COLEOPTERA: BRUCHIDAE)
Main Article Content
By means of a backcross breeding program, high levels of resistance to the Mexican bean weevil, Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), were transferred from wild bean accessions to bean cultivars. Four variants of arcelin, the antibiosis factor, showed differential effects on the biology of the insect. Thus, arcelin 1-derived lines were highly resistant to the weevil with a level of resistance equal to that of the resistant check. Arcelin 2 lines were intermediate, while lines obtained from crosses with arcelin 3 and 4 were susceptible. Resistant lines were coded RAZ and will be distributed to national programs in Africa and Latin America where the Mexican bean weevil is an important storage pest.
